We are fourth generation buffalo producers. My great grandfather,
Earl J. Peterson purchased the first three head in 1937 from Fort Niobrara
National Wildlife Refuge in Valentine, Nebraska. The herd varied in
size from 50 to 165 until his death in 1966. The ranch was then turned
over to my grandparents, Lawrence and Georgia Peterson. In 1972, the
whole herd was sold to settle Earl's estate, that is except for three
head that Grandma Georgia borrowed money to buy. The buffalo were mainly
a hobby. My grandparents supplied meat for a barbecue in town and also
ran their own concession stand selling their delicious grass fed product.
My grandfather passed away in 1987, leaving my grandmother to continue
the legend. She managed the ranch, led tours and taught many children
and adults the benefits and history of the buffalo. In 1997, I returned
and began managing the ranch and buffalo operation. At that time the
decision was made to increase the herd. Currently, there are over 900
buffalo on our ranch. Grandma Georgia taught me a lot about buffalo
and still enjoys having people come to the ranch and listen to our story.
Earl, Lawrence and Georgia are all members of the National Bison Association
Hall of Fame. My wife Jenny and I are continuing what has become our
family tradition, raising native, grass fed buffalo. With almost 65
years of experience our herd is the oldest private herd in the county.
